American Farmers & Ranchers handed out $1,500 in scholarships to youth competitors in the livestock handling contest at the Tulsa Farm Show, Dec. 11.
The contest emphasizes safe, humane handling of livestock. In a timed event, three-person teams are judged on their ability to administer a vaccination, ear tag and check the temperature of the animal. The actual handling of livestock was the second and final phase of the contest. The first phase was in July at the Big 3 livestock judging contest at Oklahoma State University were teams had to qualify by taking a written test on animal husbandry.
This event is one of our ways to help young people work with livestock in a safe, humane way.
The overall winning team this year was the Pawnee FFA which included Tucker Wilson, Maddison Vance and Walter Ware. Second place Perkins-Tryon FFA team members included Jacob Gould, Kaylee Brunker and Hailea Hooten. The third place team members from Morrison FFA were Collin Ring, Trevor Vernon and Clint Stuart.
The other winning teams, in order of finish included: 4th, Hydro-Eakley FFA #2; 5th, Hydro-Eakley FFA #1; 6th, Locust Grove FFA; 7th (tie) Latta FFA and Madill FFA; 9th, Glencoe FFA; 10th, Newkirk FFA.
This was the 15th year AFR has sponsored the livestock handling contest.
